Is 'Killers' as bad as Carl Ichan says? Does 'Shrek' have any gas left? Is 'Predator's the surprise hit?
Will "Babies" be the next surprise doc smash?
Thomas Balmes' "Babies" shows one year in the life of four infants, growing up in Mongolia, Namibia, San Francisco and Tokyo. It's mighty simple, but have you seen the trailer with an audience? Set to Sufjan's Stevens' "The Perpetual Self," the trailer has played huge with every audience we've seen it with. People laugh. People go "Awww." And everybody reacts at the same moments in the same ways. It's freakin' "March of the Penguins" with Babies. Focus Features is releasing "Babies" and if the movie is properly handled, there's no reason why it can't be a documentary blockbuster. It may not do "March of the Penguins"-style $75 million, but hormones alone should get it to $25 plus million.
"Babies" opens May 7.
