Plus: Horror and comedies make their summertime mark
Winner: Horror makes a summertime statement
Hollywood has made a killing off of horror movies, but rarely in the summer. This year, two films became cash cows for Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. respectively during the summer frame. "The Purge" earned horrible reviews, but grossed $64 million on a budget of just $3 million (cha-ching). "The Conjuring" became a critic's favorite and has found $132 million to date on a budget of just $20 million (whoa). So profitable it's scary.
