Last year you were way off in underestimating Harry Potter and Captain America, and overestimating Green Lantern and Cars 2 as I recall, but I think your predictions this year will be pretty much spot on.

I'm not sure about Snow White though. I can't say I'm interested in it, and I don't think there's a whole lot of anticipation for it, but maybe I'm wrong.

What is up with the guy who is writing the descriptions for these films on this site? Brave might not do too well because young boys won't see it? Prometheus might not do too well unless they can capture a female audience? Thoughts like that are why movies these days suck. Dumb marketing people categorize movies into slots thinking that certain movies will only appeal to certain kind of people as if women will only watch a film if it has a significant relationship in every movie. So instead bad marketers have the movie dumbed down to the lowest common denominator where it tries to appeal to everyone and just ends up being a sucky mediocre flick.

mmcb105 Movies are a business. Acknowledging that fact does not necessarily mean you are perpetuating the worst aspects of that model.

Also, saying that Brave doesn't appeal to young boys or Prometheus isn't capturing female interest, doesn't mean they wouldn't like the movie, just that the marketing departments didn't target their commercials well enough.

I'm not saying that studios don't put out bad movies sometimes in an effort to appeal to everyone, just that this reviewer isn't causing or adding to any of the problems you mentioned.

Yeah I think your pretty spot on. The only one I'm second guessing is MIB 3. Not just because it's an old franchise but mainly because it's troubled development and script issues might mean it turns out to be a bad film. MI 4 had an overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics, which probably would have helped spark viewer interest. Not sure if MIB 3 will get the same reception.

Sadly, I think Battleship will crack the top ten list for the summer. It looks so terrible, but it will probably rake in a ton of money since it looks so similar to the Transformers movies.

    Horrible predicitons.

The Avengers is tracking for $500 million overall and TDKR will hit close to that number, too.

And your prediction for MIB3 may be the worst ever. Won't be ANYWHERE near the top-10 in grosses this summer.

Bitch please As of today, Avengers is already over 1 billion. Yeah, this prediction really underestimated the power of Joss Whedon.

Aundre The Avengers is at $457 million. Not quite sure where you got a billion. We're looking at domestic performance, not worldwide.
But in response to the OP's statement about Men In Black, I'm gonna have to agree; it will do well, sure, but it won't make the top ten.

Even if the bad buzz coming from inside Sony itself sadly turns out to be true (that it's a stinker), I think Spider-Man will be luck to make $200 million. The lack of enthusiasm for it is deafening.

Rebooting Spiderman is such a huge slap in the face, what's gonna happen when AG's completed his contracted films (trilogy?), reboot to Amazing/Ultimate? Sony, GTFO!

blue_flames The site's American and, generally speaking, films will take more in the US than the RotW (tho of course there are many films that fall the opposite way). Not forgetting they're kinda insular... (IIRC the majority of adult Americans don't have a passport).

Write These predictions are not realistic. Avengers will only make $385 million when it's pre-sales are 150% more then all Marvel movies combined at this same time? The Avenger is going to either break Harry Potters $169 million record or come very close. The Avengers will have box office legs and easily make it to $400 million plus.

Also, there is no way The Amazing Spiderman is going to make $300 million when it is coming out 2 weeks before The Dark Knight Rises. It will definitely be the lowest grossing of all the Spiderman movies. It won't even sniff $300 million but might make $200 if Sony get's good word of mouth.

as much as i love batman, i honestly think avengers will destroy it box office wise. i see batman ending up domestically around 360 mil and the avengers at 490mil, maybe more. Honestly the avengers could become the highest grossing movie of all time. I think to many people are under estimating how many demographics this movie appeals to. Us geeks, kids, adults, action movie fans, comic fans, fans of just the movies, and then just the audience who wants to see a epic summer movie. Look at the reviews for this film by the way, you can guarantee the word of mouth is going to be excellent, leading to amazing legs.

delfra My friend you're future foresight is proving to be very right. I was saying the same thing before "The Avengers" opened. As i kept seeing box office projections of the film opening with 150-160 million, i kept thinking to myself that the numbers are too low. I started truly thinking the "Avengers" could be the first film to hit 200 million and it's opening weekend, i even have posts on Rotten Tomatoes, Yahoo and You tube i believe saying this before the movie opened. 500 million domestically now looks inevitable, and 600 million domestically highly possible.

Overestimating Amazing Spider-Man and Men in Black 3 IMO. MIB 2 had a substantial drop from the first one, this one had bad press with the script problems plus I expect a drop even from part 2 adjusted numbers.
Amazing Spider-Man - everybody reaction to this is surprise that they would adapt it. I don't see it going over 250 (and that would be a huge success IMO).

Am I the only one thinking that the R rating is going to sink Prometheus? Not saying it'll be a bad flick, I just feel it'll be hard pressed to crack the top 10 this summer, especially with Battleship and Bourne not making the cut.

delfra I don't think the 'R' rating will sink "Prometheus" at all, since from the beginning it was never advertised or promoted as a film for kids anyway. I believe the film will play extremely well to older audiences, who are very familiar with 'Ridley Scott's' work. These kids are'nt too familiar with 'Scott' anyway, so the film will do fine, i know i'm looking forward to it. I think it does 140-175 million domestically at the box office.

385 million? it looks like "The Avengers" will hit that mark by monday, in all fairness you did say it could go well past 400 million domestically. And now it's looking like "The Avengers" will far exceed even that amount. I think it can end up grossing as much as 600 million domestically, what do you know think it could end up grossing?

I disagree with most of the commenters opinions on Spiderman, I think it will do really well and just because it's a reboot doesn't mean it will be bad.

    Mib is way too high.
    Spiderman too high.
    Brave too high.
    Prometheus too low.

The bourne Identity will replace something on this list, I think it will replace Brave.

      Dave Bourne Legacy you mean,

and i think your very wrong i dont think Brave will make that much but there is no way in hell bourne will replace it, i think if its lucky it will be a little over 100 million. No Matt Damon & an august release (some have down well, but ALOT have seriously flopped in august)

I do believe the Avengers estimate will be rapidly defeated and I'll bet it beats out the Dark Knight Rises with the family friendly tones and appeal. Also, I'm betting that Prometheus will do better than predicted with, as you said, incredible marketing that's targeting not just geeks and nerds like myself. I'd also bank on Snow White doing worse than projected despite my interest in it. People just don't like Kristen Stewart or are a part of the rapidly diminishing Twilight crowd. That one will highly depend on the quality. Amazing Spiderman is about right, perhaps a little on the high side and I'm betting on Brave pulling through in grand fashion. I'm also praying that Madagascar and Ice Age fail. Some franchises just need to die.

JR When you say people just don't like Kristen Stewart, you are amongst a minority. She was just placed #3 on the Forbes list for most powerful actress in Hollywood, which measures a ton more than just the amount of money she makes. I know... you'll need to see the proof many times over before you'll accept it, but the plain truth of the matter is... Snow White and the Huntsman will top $700 million worldwide. summer.

The Knight will always "rise" after the sun sets. All of us has seen Mr. Chris Nolan's grey cells. He is capable of showing skills no director has shown.

Don't you think screen writers have borrowed elements from Hellboy 2 ( where the villain unleashes a golden army) and the Transformers franchise (where you have a Tesseract in lieu of a cube. Compare the portal stuff of T:DOTM with Avengers and you will get it!

I think Prometheus will surprise as a larger hit than is now anticipated. I think it might open only at #2, but have staying power. It has a solid fan base. Moreover, there are few horror and non-super hero sci-fi movies. If there are good reviews and word of mouth it will have staying power pushing it to the 250 range.
MIB III? Is there really a market for this? It's goofy and I don't think people are looking for goofy. This will be the summer of dark, foreboding movies.

      D. Crawford So wrong...The Avengers blew everybody and everything away this summer...$620 million domestic total, and $1.5 billion worldwide. I saw both the Avengers and The Dark Knight rises (TDKR), and liked both movies. But the diffence for me, like with everyone else it appears, I saw it more that once. Whereas, with TDKR, I could only take watching it once. Not to put TDKR down, but its just wasn't as entertaining to me personally.

This is the first website I went to and saw negative things about The Amazing Spider-Man, I personally think this movie looks amazing. I think it looks 12X better than the original spider-man movies. I am really hoping for good numbers on it. But I have noticed Sony is not promoting it well. Which lately seems to be sony's rate of doing things. If this movie bombs it will be because of the low marketing.
