Who makes the top 10?
10. The Heat
Release date: June 28
Comparisons: "The Proposal" ($163 million), "Identity Thief" ($133 million), "Bridesmaids" ($169 million)
Predictions: $150 million
Why: Universal Pictures released a mediocre comedy with a great marketing campaign last February. Normally, that's enough to get you a good opening, but "Identity Thief" did a four multiple (that means four times its gross) which is incredibly rare in the movie business these days. The unquestioned reason why? Melissa McCarthy. Since her breakout in "Bridesmaids," there were questions whether McCarthy was a true movie star. "Identity Thief" was proof she's very legit. Director Paul Feig (who also helmed "Bridesmaids") has paired her with none other than Sandra Bullock who is starring in her first leading role since her Oscar winning turn in "The Blind Side." In fact, it's just her first leading role since "Blind Side" 3 1/2 years ago. Fox is so bullish on the comedy they moved it from April to right before the July 4th weekend to take on "White House Down" with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. Who wins? Ladies first gentlemen. Ladies first.
