HitFix ranks the legend's greatest films to date
1. 'Jaws' (1975)
Even now, almost 40 years after its initial release, "Jaws" remains one of the best examples of doing everything right, an irony when you consider how turbulent a production it was. The casting, the script, the score, and Spielberg's young and hungry directorial eye all came together in a way that is magic, and what really astonishes is that there is no real gimmick here. It's just a good story, well-told, with great character material. This is from that era when Spielberg loved faces, and when you look at a 1974 beach in Amity, that's how 1974 really looked. It's not the Hollywood version, and it's important to remember that when we first fell in love with Spielberg's work, it was in no small part because when we looked at the screen, we saw ourselves, and never moreso in his blockbusters than in this one.
