HitFix ranks the legend's greatest films to date
23. 'Always' (1989)
Spielberg harbored the desire to remake the WWII-era fantasy 'A Guy Named Joe' for many years, and while critical reaction was rough on this one, the chemistry between Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss is great, and there is an unabashed sentimentality that Spielberg indulges fully here that is appropriate for the story. It's one of the funniest films Spielberg has made, and the fire-fighting sequences, as photographed by Mikael Solomon, are breathtaking on a big screen. Brad Johnson was miscast, but Audrey Hepburn is luminous in her final film role, and I wish Universal would spring for a gorgeous Blu-ray transfer of this one so people can get busy rediscovering all the good things about it.
