HitFix ranks the legend's greatest films to date
9. 'Jurassic Park' (1993)
The effects in Spielberg's adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel may look a little dated now, but at the time of the film's release they were cutting-edge - a masterful blend of both CGI and animatronic techniques. From giant peaceful Brontos to lithe man-eating Velociraptors to, never before had humankind's forebears been envisioned so realistically as Spielberg's dinos, and their power to awe and terrify remains intact nearly 20 years since the film first hit multiplexes. Most impressive is Spielberg's ability to meld big-budget spectacle and Hitchockian suspense, particularly in the justly-famous T-Rex sequence that serves as the film's pulse-pounding centerpiece. From that iconic water ripple to the beast's first earth-shattering roar, Spielberg brilliantly milks the sequence for thrills; with this film and "Jaws," he cemented his status as one of cinema's greatest nightmare-inducers.
