Joel Edgerton

Age: 38

Best known for: "Warrior," "Animal Kingdom"

Breakout potential: Ok, so I get that we also included Edgerton on our "Breakout Stars of 2011" list; nevertheless, I predict that 2012 will be the year his career truly achieves "white-hot" status. Like Jeremy Renner before him, the Aussie actor is proving it's still possible to become a movie studio leading man in your late 30's.  Edgerton is well known down under and has appeared in supporting roles in everything from "King Arthur" to the indie "Kinky Boots" to Luke Skywalker's Uncle in "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith."  His latest shot at becoming a major Hollywood star, however, was sparked by his work in the acclaimed 2010 Australian indie thriller "Animal Kingdom."  Two of his follow ups, "The Thing" and "Warrior," didn't exactly make him a household name, but its his three 2012 projects that likely could.  In January, Edgerton stars in the thriller "Wish You Were Here" which debuts at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.  In August, he'll star opposite Jennifer Garner in Disney's "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" and in December he appears alongside Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio as Carey Mulligan's husband in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby." The latter may provide him some critical notices, but if "Odd Life" is the late summer hit Disney hopes it will be, he may find himself adored by millions of soccer moms across the world. - Gregory Ellwood
