Repeat with some skip: Nate Ruess, "Grand Romantic"
The fun. singer has such a pure, untarnished voice, he may as well have a synth named after him. What those music projects do for his instrument is give him structure, direction and -- at times -- constraints. There are very few of the latter here, on his solo debut. Here, he exhausts his freedom at top-volume, thwarting dynamics in favor of over-the-top-arrangements and sometimes with treacly, first-drafted lyricism. For every successful Cure-ish experiment ("You Light My Fire") and honed sentimental ode ("Brightside," "Grand Romantic"), there's forgettable over-produced fill, as personal as he pours. A better edit and another go would have given "Grand Romantic" longer, more lasting legs, for its grand ambitions to leave a grander impact. "Nothing Without Love," though? Fantastic single.
