1. Bill Hader
The gradations between positions 14-5 are slim at best, and really come down to personal preference. 4-2 are a step up from those, but are interchangeable based upon how the wind is blowing. But Hader is a notch above all the others, the anchor of the show even when he isn’t sending the audience (and himself) into crying fits of laughter as City Correspondent Stefon. The depth and breadth of his contributions cannot be overstated. Need a game show host? Hader. Need a bizarre character who pours his Vietnam flashbacks into the mouth of a puppet? Hader. Need a dead- on impression? Hader. Need a straight man to react to the madness around him? Hader. For some reason, he’s never really broken big outside of “SNL”. He’s had film appearances here, and writing credits there, but Studio 8H is the place where he really shines. That either means he’s in it for the continued long haul or will cut the cord entirely in order to make it in other parts of the industry. But for now, he stands as the most important member of the show.
