With 'Iron Man 3' on the way we take stock of his best work
2. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"
The year: 2005
The role: Small time thief-turned neo noir hero Harry Lockhart
The reason it's on the list: If you want to trace the seeds of Downey's "Iron Man" characterization, particularly as seen in the latest film, go back eight years to this delightful romp that has only gotten better over time. A nice bookend to "The Singing Detective," Shane Black's noir comedy fit the actor's confident swagger and rapid fire delivery like a glove, making it easily one of the most defining portrayals of Downey's career.
