3. "The Circle of Life"
Film: "The Lion King"
Year released: 1994
Performed by: Carmen Twillie and Lebo M
Why: By the time "The Lion King" hit theaters 20 years ago this June, Disney had perfected their new formula. The company under Jeffrey Katzenberg was clicking away, high on hits like "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin." "The Lion King" was the peak of all of that and it dominated pop culture and the box office. And they put you on notice with the music from the very first moment, that Zulu shout crying out as the sun rises over the horizon: "Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba!" The opening scene, of young Simba being born into his rightful place as future king, plays out with the full song, the animals of the kingdom arriving to bow to their new ruler. What am I doing? You know the scene and the song well. They were, after all, instantly iconic. It was the crown jewel of the award-winning soundtrack composed by Elton John and Tim Rice.
