Release date: 2002
Director: Sam Raimi
Best moment: The hanging kiss in the rain between Spider-Man and Mary Jane
Legacy: "Spider-Man" dared to do the unthinkable -- slow down the story just a tad to let Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) develop into something more than a one-note comic book hero. Of course, there's plenty of action, as befits a Raimi movie, but humor and heart, too. "Spider-Man" aspired to be something more than just rock 'em-sock 'em web slinging and crime fighting. It honed in on Peter Parker's ambivalence about his new skills and his romantic yearning for the girl who has a crush on his alter ego. After "Spider-Man," audiences looked for an emotional element with their action, and the bar was raised.
