23. "MONSTERS VS. ALIENS"
Released: March 27, 2009
Directors: Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon
Voice cast: Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert, Paul Rudd
How it stacks up: DreamWorks' most expensive animated endeavor to date (budgeted at $175 million) is a pretty disappointing film, really, one that didn't have too many narrative ideas beyond the concept evident in its title. What could have been a witty homage to the kaiju genre, "Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman" and '50s sci-fi is ultimately a bland diversion, peripherally aware of that cinematic history at best. No, it didn't need to go in a particularly cineaste direction, but doing so could have injected it with some much-needed personality. It has its share of dazzling imagery, though.
Memorable moment: Colbert's President Hathaway greeting alien invaders with John Williams' iconic five-note jingle from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is one thing — expected, even. But busting out the Harold Faltermeyer "Beverly Hills Cop" score is a whole other delight.
