Outstanding Comedy Series
• Louie (FX)
• Modern Family (ABC)
• Parks and Recreation (NBC)
• Silicon Valley (HBO)
• Transparent (Amazon)
• Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)
• Veep (HBO)
Should win: Pretty much any winner but a "Modern Family" repeat would make me happy. "Louie" is still an engrossing, unpredictable, meticulously detailed experiment, "Silicon Valley" and "Kimmy Schmidt" are giddy fun, "Veep" did its best and smartest season yet, and "Transparent" was just a gorgeous storytelling achievement, though we can argue about whether it belongs in this category. But I'm pulling for the (incredibly unlikely) win for "Parks and Recreation," which is one of TV's all-time great comedies, has never won the award, and went out with one of its very best seasons.
Will win: No show has ever won a series category six years in a row, and the expansion of the voting pool also probably works against another "Modern Family" win. "Transparent" could certainly win as the show of the moment, but too many Academy members will likely grouse over its presence on the comedy side of things, which opens up the field for "Veep" to get a win that's at least a few years overdue.
