The nominees are:
“Night Train,” Jason Aldean
“Two Lanes of Freedom,” Tim McGraw
“Same Trailer Different Park," Kacey Musgraves
“Based On A True Story,” Blake Shelton
“Red,” Taylor Swift
WHO’S MISSING: Voters went for commercial successes, leaving out such great albums as Jason Isbell’s “Southeastern.” Grammy favorite Brad Paisley also was ignored for “Wheelhouse,” as was the massively popular duo Florida Georgia Line.
THE PLAYERS: A good mix of newcomers, like the talented Musgraves, and veterans, such as McGraw, the category plays it safe with artists familiar to mainstream country listeners and names that the folks watching at home will recognize.
THE ODDS: Shelton seems to be on an unstoppable roll, but some country voters may appreciate the loyalty Swift still shows to the format.
THE WINNER: “Based On A True Story,” Blake Shelton
