Kyle Mooney / Christopher Guest
Mooney’s presence in pre-produced segments this season makes this a natural pairing. That presence has made him the standout of the six new cast members, and a lot of that stems from the muted comic sensibility on display in “Ice Cream” and “Beer Pong”. These short films aren’t necessarily gut-bustingly funny, but they do represent a point of view that separates these shorts from those in The Lonely Island era. “SNL” should run with that and have Mooney study the multitude of shorts that Guest wrote and shot during his time on the show, in addition to everything Guest went on to do afterwards. We don’t need a “Waiting for Guffman”-esque parody when Lady Gaga hosts. But the pre-produced shorts represent the most creatively fertile aspect of the show at this point. Rather than close down their possibilities, “SNL” should open them up.
