Why it's terrible: Whoever cut together the trailer for "Gangster Squad" probably should have been brought in to recut the move after its release was delayed by the theater shooting in Aurora, a tragedy that had superficial similarities to scenes in the movie. Those early trailers were slick, stylish and suggested that moments of meaty acting for the strong cast. While the slickness remained in the final cut, the style never played as anything more than "L.A. Confidential"-lite and none of the actors felt authentic to the period nor did their characters feel properly arced or developed. With five or six heroes giving one-dimensional, forgettable performance, the entire movie collapsed around Sean Penn's unrepentant scenery chewing in which Mickey Cohen's reign of terror over Los Angeles was reduced to "Some guy with a machine gun who liked to yell a lot."
