2. "Shallow Grave" (1994)
Boyle's zesty 1994 debut feature, which won him the BAFTA for Best British Film, may be his most lo-fi work by far, but it's also arguably his most satisfying as a pure storytelling exercise. A twisty, impressively nasty little thriller that counters Hitchcockian wit with a healthy side of Scots gloom, it begins with that hoariest of setups -- a dead body and a suitcase full of cash -- yet manages to surprise at every turn. (And we're talking a lot of turns here.) The star trio of Ewan McGregor, Kerry Fox and Christopher Eccleston was as auspicious a revelation as Boyle himself.
