5. "Sunshine" (2007)
Two different schools of science fiction filmmaking clash unexpectedly in Boyle's thrilling voyage to the sun: what begins as stately, esoteric astro-spectacle in the "Solaris" or "2001" mold flips into panicked, scuzzy space horror more along the lines of an "Alien." The transition shouldn't work -- and indeed, for many, it didnt -- but Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland (who also successfully took the director into the supernatural realm with "28 Days Later...") have fashioned such a visceral tale of man versus nature that such key changes feel like part of the trip. Meanwhile, the serene images conjured by DP Alwin Kuchler and production designer Mark Tildesley put any number of Hollywood CGI splurges to shame.
