6. "Millions" (2005)
Boyle's first attempt at a family film gained more for me than anything else in his oeuvre upon a second viewing. Upon first seeing it in the theater, I thought it a mildly eccentric diversion; catching it by chance on TV a few years later, my eyes were opened to the sophisticated moral architecture and empathetically weird psychology of Frank Cottrell Boyce's screenplay. I'm still a little less sold on the spiritual subtext of this subversively anti-consumerist modern fable, but "Millions" remains perhaps Boyle's most purely joyous film, without playing broadly to the gallery.
