7. "Trance" (2013)
With two back-to-back Best Picture nominees behind him, perhaps Boyle had had enough of the prestige lark. Sexy, silly and serpentine, this über-chic heist thriller, somehow filmed amid the director's Olympic preparations last year, is strictly the work of a man at play: filmed using every trick and device at his disposal, with Anthony Dod Mantle's camerawork reaching fluorescent new heights, it might be Boyle's most purely beautiful film -- and his emptiest. Nothing particularly wrong with that: for all the narrative's suggestions of Nolan-esque density, the style seems to be the substance in a film where a pretty (and pretty expensive) picture is what every character covets.
