9. "The Beach" (2000)
Boyle's decision to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in place of his hitherto regular leading man Ewan McGregor in his adaptation of Alex Garland's Generation X take on "Lord of the Flies" caused a rift between the director and McGregor that is unresolved to this day. One wonders, however, if McGregor ever watched this beautiful but murky social allegory and realizes that he dodged a bullet: sporadically arresting (particularly when Tilda Swinton's loopy seductress Sal is the focus), it's an oddly humorless effort from Boyle, grimacing under the supposed weight of its pop philosophy. Garland and Boyle would collaborate more directly, to more thought-provoking effect, in years to come. Still, William Orbit's soundtrack was pretty much the sound of my final year of high school. so I can't stay mad at this woozy folly.
