Winner: "Beasts of the Southern Wild"

Why: Even after winning the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, the box office prospects for "Beasts" were slim at best.  Yes, Fox Searchlight was spearheading the underdog film's marketing campaign, but based on the studio's acquisition price a $1-2 million gross would have been a solid success.  Instead, "Beasts" has been one of the summer's slow burning hits. The potential best picture nominee should hit the $10 million mark sometime in September once again proving no one markets to the art house like Searchlight.
