Background: Many fans' favorite scenes in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" involved Ryan Reynolds as the smart-ass assassin Deadpool. Fox seemed confident that they could spin the character off into his own film. Many starts and stops followed, including the fleeting interest of directors like David S. Goyer, Ruben Fleischer and Robert Rodriguez.

Current Status: We last heard that special effects wizard Tim Miller would direct a rebooted film version, although Reynolds' participation was up in the air (he's gone on record saying he still wants to do it however). Now that "X-Men: First Class" has taken the mutant heroes in a new direction for Fox, Deadpool seems to be on the back burner.
