TV's Most Memorable Sex Scenes: 'True Blood,' 'Mad Men,' 'Game of Thrones'
Will the newest season of 'Girls' add to the classics?
'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'
Set the mood: Buffy is a slayer. Angel is a vampire. Buffy is nearly 17. Angel is a couple hundred years old, but looks like he's 30. For 24 episodes, they flirted and kissed and did everything but have sex. Finally, in "Surprise," they do the deed, but the consequence is unexpected: Angel has become Angelus. His soul is gone and he's a brutal killing machine. It's every teenage girl's worst nightmare, that sex will change everything, only in this case, it REALLY changes everything.
Why it’s memorable: Very few TV shows have ever handled sex and its consequences as effectively as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." We only included one "Buffy" sex scene here, but we could have included Buffy & Spike bringing down the house in "Smashed" or Tara and Willow's steamy first encounter. But make no mistake: When it comes to "Buffy" sex, it gets no better than "Surprise"/"Innocence," both in terms of the short-term impact on the show's tremendous second season and also long-term impact on the interactions between all of the characters. This was the moment Joss Whedon's show took the leap from cult-y fun to a TV classic.
