TV's Bottom 10 of 2013 from The Fien Print
Which shows join 'Dads' and 'Dracula' in Dan Fienberg's Bottom 10
10. Zombie "Community" (NBC)
I was prepared to cut Season 4 of "Community" slack on the "It's not like it was *awful* it just wasn't the 'Community' we know and love" theory. Then I watched a couple episodes of Season 5 and my sympathy drained. Why, I decided, should I cut "Community" Season 4 slack for being a neutered zombie version of a sitcom I once liked? I don't blame the actors. They all tried hard. I don't blame David Guarascio and Moses Port, who were put in an untenable position and weren't trying to make a bad show. They were just trying to make a show they weren't temperamentally designed to make. Heck, I don't blame NBC or Sony Pictures TV. Sony just wanted to make more money, darnit. And NBC was willing to keep around a show that got low ratings and had been stripped of its distinctiveness and who came blame them for that? Well, maybe we can blame Sony and NBC for that. We can try to just pretend that Season 4 never happened and I guess I'll allow for that, but someday -- maybe after this season or maybe after one additional season and a movie -- "Community" will be over and the show will have its complete body-of-work and Season 4 will be the part of the DVD set that gathers dust, that nobody ever discusses. Season 4 wasn't even awful in that "Serial Killer Landry" way that lets you make jokes forever. No, "Zombie Community" merely took a show that had a voice and made it generic for 13 episodes. It took a show that I once loved and made me dread the weekly disappointment. Yeah. That's worth placement on a Worst of 2013 list, or at least a "Bottom of 2013" list.
