TV Shows on the Bubble 2013
From 'Community' to 'Happy Endings' to 'Hannibal' how are things looking?
BubbleWatch: ABC's 'Happy Endings'
SHOW: "Happy Endings" (ABC)
IN ITS FAVOR: There's a dedicated audience that swears by "Happy Endings" and thinks it's one of the best comedies on network TV, with one of TV's best comedic ensembles. "Happy Endings" has also been getting one of TV's biggest DVR bumps since moving to Fridays and it wasn't doing so poorly, DVR-wise, on Tuesdays. ABC presumably knows what Hulu and iTunes figures look like and it stands to reason that this young-skewing cult comedy would be exactly the sort of show people would watch through non-traditional means. "Happy Endings" also comes from Sony Pictures TV, a studio that has become famous for working to make additional seasons possible on low-rated comedies like "Breaking In" and "Community."
AGAINST IT: In traditional means, "Happy Endings" has been drawing numbers that simply can't justify renewal in any traditional sense. "Malibu Country" is considered to be on the bubble and it averaged nearly double the numbers "Happy Endings" has been doing on Friday. Seriously. The ratings for this show are awful.
OUR TOTALLY UNINFORMED GUESS: Either ABC's going to look beyond basic ratings or it won't. If ABC only looks at ratings, "Happy Endings" can't possibly get a renewal and you'll hear a lot about USA and whatnot. Presumably, though, somebody at ABC has a sense of whether or not there's money in iTunes, Hulu and DVD sales. I genuinely don't know, which makes it impossible to predict. Nothing *I* know points to renewal, so it'll be up to ABC to see alternatives and the advantages of getting "Happy Endings" to 75+ total episodes with another season.
FINAL VERDICT: Cancelled!
