TV Shows on the Bubble 2013
From 'Community' to 'Happy Endings' to 'Hannibal' how are things looking?
BubbleWatch: ABC's 'The Neighbors'
SHOW: "The Neighbors" (ABC)
IN ITS FAVOR: "The Neighbors" is in much better shape than you probably think it is if you only paid attention to pre-season critical mockery and early ratings. Adding in DVR numbers, it gets to nearly 7 million weekly viewers and a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49. That's not great, but it's not awful either. Plus, ABC got to put out that gloating and misleading ad about critical reevaluation. Some reviewers actually really like "The Neighbors."
AGAINST IT: There's still a perception that ABC was unable to fully change about the quality of the show and the ratings don't suggest that viewers entirely disagreed with early disapproval. But that's all ephemeral. What's more tangible is that "The Neighbors" gets a miniscule -- under 20% -- DVR bump when compared to other successful comedies and to more bubble-y comedies.
OUR TOTALLY UNINFORMED GUESS: This is tight. ABC never wavered in supporting "The Neighbors" and people who actually watched the last chunk of the season, the musical episode in particular, know that it was trying some interesting things by the end. If ABC had a CBS-level comedy development slate, I'd say "The Neighbors" would be doomed. It doesn't. I think a renewal, perhaps for midseason, would befit this sort of steady performer.
