'Soap'

'Soap'

Premise: A primetime sitcom spoof of daytime soaps. The popular "Benson," starring Robert Guillaume, was a spin-off.

Original airdates: 1977 - 1981

Why a reboot: Soap operas -- with their instantly recognizable melodrama, ridiculous twists and lewd content -- are always an easy target, so any potential re-boot of "Soap" would have to maintain the sharp edge of the original and not just trot out the same old now-tired spoofs. "Soap" was a wide-ranging comedy with with a diverse cast featuring tube comedy aces like Robert Mulligan and Katherine Helmond, real soap opera vets, and up-and-comers like Billy Crystal. Just imagine the current cast that a smart, high-budget new version could draw.
