'Chico and the Man'

Premise: The show followed the unlikely friendship that forms between a grouchy white widower (Jack Albertson) and the young Latino man (Freddie Prinze) who asks him for a job.

Original airdates:
1974-78

Why a reboot: As the first television set in a Mexican-American neighborhood (East Los Angeles), it was also a top ten hit -- until Prinze committed suicide in the midst of shooting the third season. While his death casts a pall over the legacy of the show, the bond between the two main characters was both ground-breaking and good television. Almost forty years later, Latino actors are still sorely underrepresented in prime time -- isn't it about time to try this again?
