Alan Parker has proven himself one of the few modern filmmakers who constantly and consistently has explored different ways to tell musically-driven stories on film.  His adaptation of Pink Floyd's sprawling double-album is startingly on-the-nose at times, but it features some strong supporting turns by people like Bob Hoskins and Jenny Wright, disturbing animation by Gerald Scarfe, and a remarkable display of disconnected inhumanity from Bob Geldof in the lead.  Taken as a whole, it taps into the broken heart of the album in a potent way that is common to a generation raised in the shadow of WWII, and it remains blunt-force effective even now.
