We don't remember this now, but Norman Jewison casting Original London Tevye Topol over Original Broadway Tevye Zero Mostel was a massive controversy. Among people who care about such things. In retrospect, Topol's more grounded, organic take on the tradition-loving milkman was a better fit with Jewison's surprisingly gritty take on the beloved Bock-Harnick-Stein musical. Yes, there are stylized moments like "Tevye's Dream," but the film's most memorable sequences take place in the impressively authentic locations in Yugoslavia, which made for a perfect stand-in for Anatevka. Oswald Morris earned his cinematography Oscar.
