6. "The Fly" (David Cronenberg, 1986)
Remake of: "The Fly" (Kurt Neumann, 1958)
The original, James Clavell-penned “The Fly” is a tidy little curio that, even by the standards of the era’s cheap-and-cheerful, morally grounded genre twists, was already rather strange in 1958. Still, this story of man’s biological violations was always waiting for an imagination as expansive and eccentric as David Cronenberg’s to do it justice: emboldened by the advanced possibilities of special effects, his visceral, darkly sexualized and entirely gross “Fly” is far the more disquieting work.
