Top 10 outer space movies of all-time
How will 'Gravity' measure up against these classics?
5. 'Apollo 13'
Director: Ron Howard
Why: "Apollo 13" is a based on a true story tale about three men trapped in space who are running out of oxygen and have no idea if they'll ever make it back to Earth, a dramatic science fiction thriller if ever there was one. Not everything about Ron Howard's film is historically accurate, but the movie still offers up an astounding level of factually correct detail. Somewhere near the top of that pile is Howard's use of the KC-135 reduced gravity aircraft (aka the Vomit Comet). This allowed him to film some scenes in zero gravity rather than having to fake it all with harnesses and CG effects. "Apollo 13" doesn't just focus on thrills though, the movie and its characters treat space with an awe and reverence that comes across in nearly every frame. There's nothing routine about flying to the moon.
