Top 11 outer space movies of all-time
Do these classics stand the test of time?
2. 'The Right Stuff'
Director: Phil Kaufman
Why: My own personal belief is that there is no finer accomplishment for humanity in general than shaking loose the bonds of this planet and reaching space. Kaufman's extraordinary film, adapted from the book by Tom Wolfe, paints a vivid, lively, rowdy picture of the men who took the first steps in that process, the Mercury 7, the first astronauts. He digs deep into the character of these people who were willing to risk life and limb to test theories about where we could go and what we could do, and they are portrayed as real people, flaws and all. In many ways, that makes them seem more heroic. With one of the all-time great scores, this sprawling epic takes its time and makes full use of a cast packed with familiar faces, and when Warner Bros. releases the 30th anniversary Blu-ray later this year, anyone who isn't already aware of just how tremendous a film this is owes it to themselves to catch up.
