4. Bedtime Story
Year: 1995
Director: Mark Romanek
Why: Romanek and Madonna first collaborated on 1993's very well lit "Rain," but they created something truly special with "Bedtime Story." So much so that its part of the permanent video collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Using the video's reported $5 million budget to good use, "Bedtime Story" finds Madonna in the middle of a surrealistic dream where she moves through living images inspired by artists such as Rene Magritte and Frida Kahlo. Romanek's wondrous eye creates an almost non-stop montage of iconic and gorgeous images. From the twirling sufi dancers to Madonna's image on rotating on a floating cube to her giving "birth" to a flock of doves, "Bedtime Story" provides more sensory overload than any other of the pop star's videos. And like some of the most powerful art created on film, paper or stone, the more its watched the more questions it creates in the mind of the viewer. Not to shabby, indeed.
