Year: 1998
Director: Jonas Åkerlund
Why: You could argue the placement of Akerlund's "Nothing Really Matters" and "Ray of Light" on this list, but like the former, Akerlund created a spectacle with "Light" that inspired many a filmmaker since. Time lapse photography wasn't necessarily new to the world of music videos, but its how Akerlund speed up Madonna's performance in this hyper kinetic track to accompany the other imagery that was so groundbreaking. The video won a 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Short Form Music Video" and won five 1998 MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year. 'Nuff said.
