No. 9 - 'True Blood'
There were people who insisted that "True Blood" got good again this year. Or maybe I misheard? Maybe what they actually said was that "True Blood" was goo-ed this season? If so, that's a message that I can begrudgingly endorse. For fans interested only in goo, ooze and viscera, Season 5 of "True Blood" was probably the show's best to date. A show that had previously been fairly conservative in the staking and liquifying of vampires became wanton. Like Forrest Gump's buddy Bubba describing the myriad applications for shrimp, "True Blood" was working its way through a sampler tray of vampire slaughter. Generally considered to be immortal, vampires were being stabbed and poked and popped and smushed and shot and fried. Their squishy insides could fill steaming buckets or Olympic-sized pools by the end of the season. "True Blood" has done what no Republican politician ever could: I've become Pro-Life, or at least I've become Pro-Life vampirically speaking. My need to see vampires die has been sated. Or, if you must kill vampires, I'd urge you to leave them in piles of CG dust as on "Buffy." Heck, "The Vampire Diaries" is one of my favorite shows and I can't remember at all what happens to vampires when they're killed on "Vampire Diaries." All I know is that they don't end up in glistening heaps of gore. Things on "True Blood" grew so monotonous that I'm almost excited to see what happens now that Alan Ball is gone. The show DESPERATELY needed some fresh... SIGH... blood.
