It’s easy to lump the show’s long history into certain arbitrary chunks. “The Digital Short” era doesn’t completely describe the time in which Andy Samberg and his “Lonely Island” creative partners Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone spent working at “SNL”. But it does describe both a comic sensibility and an approach to DIY comedy that the show simply didn’t have before and fundamentally changed the way in which it thought about distributing its vast library of material online. It didn’t help that The Lonely Island came along at the absolute perfect time. But they also existed in the first place because of technology that both “SNL” and NBC were loathe to acknowledge. “Lazy Sunday II” might have been the final “Digital Short” ever, but this is the one that serves as both a celebration and a reminder of just how much these segments had changed both the show and the cultural of comedy itself.
