5. Becca Corbett in "Rabbit Hole" (2010)
“Rabbit Hole” came after what had been widely seen as a fallow period for Kidman, marked by films and performances that didn't quite connect. The actress's responded by taking matters very much into her own hands: snapping up the rights to a Pulitzer Prize-winning play that had won a Tony for Cynthia Nixon, and hiring an unexpected auteur (John Cameron Mitchell) to direct her in it. That's a typically conscientious Kidman move, but remarkably, considering the stakes, her study of a bereaved mother in psychological stasis actually feels like one of her least worked-over performances: her emotions may spill in spontaneous, plausibly messy bursts, but she's rarely been this briskly funny on screen, either.
