4. "Watership Down" (Martin Rosen, 1978)
If nothing else, this solemnly animated adaptation of Richard Adams’s generation-spanning circle-of-life novel is certainly the most frightening film ever to revolve around characters named things like Hazel, Dandelion and Blackberry. And to that the fact that they’re all rabbits, and it’s hard to explain to the uninitiated why this film so moved and disturbed me as a child, but it remains as bloody and mortality-aware a creature feature as exists in the family-film canon. Bonus scary points for General Woundwort.
