Another remake that stands proudly beside the original – what were filmmakers on in the late 1970s? – Herzog’s take on this particular horror chestnut is spiritually loyal while fleshing out the psychology of the characters and adding layers of kink subtle enough to pass the PG test. Many films this exquisitely art-directed would lose the fright somewhere amid the décor, but this remains a tense, clammy spin on the legend, thanks in no small part to the bravura performance of the ever-unpredictable Klaus Kinski.
