Philip Kaufman’s creepy, twist-heavy, coldly witty update of the beloved 1956 B-movie is one of the rare remakes that transcends its source: a thoughtful sci-fi worst-case-scenario that penetrates the viewer’s skin principally through chilly accumulation of mood, rather than the cheap shocks that would presumably have earned it a higher rating from the MPAA. Where was this tight grip on suspense when Kaufman was directing his last film, the hopefully-not-career-finishing 2003 thriller “Twisted?”
