Jim Henson again, this time on hand to induce nightmares in a film whose technical wizardry includes turning children into mice and Anjelica Huston into… well, that. Chiefly, though, it’s the pitch-black sensibility of director Nicolas Roeg, a glorious creative match for source author Roald Dahl, that makes this among the most unnerving of all kid’s films, while Huston’s grossly glamorous, thickly accented Grand High Witch ranks among the all-time great screen villains. This was my favorite film at age seven; it hasn’t slipped too far down the list.
