2. "An American Werewolf in London" (1981)
The film that put Baker on the map was the moment that sent the makeup category into existence at the Academy Awards. It had only been recognized in honorary terms prior to that, and only twice, at that. Baker says his work on grisly werewolf wounds and a central transformation scene in the film makes him cringe when he watches it today, largely due to how far the form has come, but those first steps were nevertheless necessary, and vital, a defining moment in the history of cinema. One might be surprised that it doesn't clock in at #1, but I had to spring for something that still holds up.
