9. "Toy Story 2" (John Lasseter, 1999)
Ranking the "Toy Story" films can be a difficult task, let alone the whole of Pixar's output. The first two films in the studio's storied franchise in particular can do a do-si-do. The sequel's richer hues took the material in unexpectedly creative new directions, of course, but the original's simple brilliance was lightning in a bottle. The idea of toys being relegated to collectors' items was, in some ways, the obvious avenue to take with a follow-up, but what that idea had to say about notions of relationships developed in the 1995 original is what the Pixar crew tapped into beautifully — all under the guise of a rescue film, no less.
