4. Ian Holm, "Alien"
Ian Holm had the challenging task of justifying his character's ultimate reveal without telegraphing it to the audience in “Alien.” He crafted Ash so that the “secret” about his origins felt like a puzzle piece (that we did not know was missing) was falling into place by the story’s conclusion. I am able to discover something new about the character each time I watch the film. As mentioned previously, artist H.R. Giger’s drawings of the primordial integrated with the technological served as the influence for much of the “Alien” world (he designed the alien ship’s interior, the xenomorph itself and the space jockey). Ash, via Holm’s performance, is the dark, cautionary child born of that marriage.
