5. Rutger Hauer, "Blade Runner"
I have a confession: I love Rutger Hauer. In my ideal world he, and he alone, brought the vampire Lestat into the cinematic realm. He has a naturally eerie on-screen presence that I find fascinating to watch, a presence which was perfectly suited to his role as the leader of the rebel Replicants in “Blade Runner.” His performance is almost painful to watch as it evokes as changeable and complex a response in the viewer as Hauer imbued in the character’s trajectory. He is at once repulsive, sympathetic, loving, strong, unforgiving, wise and cruel. Mercurial does not begin to describe the rapid and seamless shifts in mood and tone that Hauer brings to the role. In another moment, this portrayal would easily sit at the top of my list.
