The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Oscar-Winning Biopic Performances
Who do the Oscar hopefuls from this year's prestige biopics need to measure up to?
4. Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980)
I think it’s actually written in the Academy rulebook that any actor playing a real-life popular music icon from age 13 to 30-something, doing their own singing and mapping out all the requisite emotional breakdowns along the way, must automatically be handed an Oscar – but that doesn’t make what Spacek achieves as country legend Loretta Lynn any less astonishing. The technique may be immaculate, but so is the emotional texture. Oh, and she nabbed a Grammy nomination for the singing, too.
